Winter has a bad reputation when it comes to plumbing. But it needn’t be a drama if you’re aware of what to keep an eye on before the frosty weather hits us. Here are three things to look out for in the run up to and during the winter months.
- Protecting your water pipes – During the winter you will need to keep your water pipes warm to stop them from freezing over. Using heat cables as a way of insulating them is always a good idea. Turning off your outside winter tap is a good idea too, as it will stop air travelling into the system and causing it to freeze.
- Servicing your boiler – Getting your boiler serviced before the weather deteriorates is advice we can’t stress enough. The last thing you need is for your boiler to die on you in the midst of winter. Getting a thorough service can highlight any problems and get them fixed before they conk out, meaning you’re aren’t left with hefty bill for a brand new boiler and icicles inside.
- Rust – Rust weakens your pipes, fixtures and fittings and can be a major factor in contributing to a burst pipe if things start to freeze over when the temperatures drop. If you notice green discolorations around your shut off valves or any orange or yellow spots then it’s best to get in touch.
